This intimate apparel got its name from the gorgeous actress Lana Turner, who had first worn a corselet in her hit movie ‘Merry Widow’. Inspired by intimate apparel of such fashion that accentuated her bust line, the style was referred to as ‘Merry Widow.’ This type of a corselet had slim panels of black, elastic yarn netting. There was a zipper behind a velvet-backed flange, and the corselet was lined with nylon voile. Merry Widow had rigid boning. However, this intimate apparel is not designed to fasten as tightly as a corset.
Lana Turner once said, “I am telling you, the merry widow was designed by a man. A woman would never do that to another woman.” Ironically, Merry Widow became the most popular bridal intimate apparel of the era.
